How to Style Your Home Like an Interior Designer

In this month’s how-to, learn how to style your home like a professional interior designer.

Lead interior designer and stylist, Sarah Martin, shares three quick tips on how you can make your home look like it was styled by a pro.

1. Don’t purchase all matchy-matchy furniture off the showroom floor.

A well-decorated home is a combination of various pieces that are cohesive, but not exactly the same. It’s okay to mix end tables and bedroom furniture. For example, order that bed you love from Pottery Barn & pick-up the nightstands from a boutique style store. Can you refinish grandma’s dresser to add in some character and charm?

2. Make sure to measure properly for area rugs.

When rugs are too small for a room, it makes the whole room look “off.” Make sure your rugs cover enough floor space for the furniture to land on nicely. When measuring for a dining table rug, it’s good to have 18” or more all the way around the table. In entry ways, go as big as you can! It will make your entry look larger and way more welcoming than an undersized door mat.

3. Less is more.

Pick a theme and let it grace your home. A few decorations here and there along with some beautiful wall art will go much further than overdoing it. I also have a “rule of one” when it comes to wall art. Like oversized wall clocks…they are awesome, but, your home only needs one! Switch it up in each room & don’t press repeat just because it’s working the first time 😉
